Flu Vaccination 2020
Posted on 23 Sep 2020
Due to the current Coronavirus situation this year’s influenza immunisation programme has had to be carried out very differently this year to ensure patient and staff safety.
For our patients aged over 65
As we only have limited supply of vaccine, and we expect this year’s demand to be greater than usual, we have split the invitations for patients over 65 years into two cohorts.
You will be invited in cohort 1 only if you pass the following criteria –
You are newly eligible to have the vaccination this year
You are aged 65 or over and new to the practice
You had you influenza vaccination at the practice last year
Due to limited vaccine availability we are advising anybody that had the vaccine elsewhere last year to return to that provider again.
When this first cohort of patients has been vaccinated we will send out an invitation to the remaining patients i.e. those that either declined the vaccine last year or had it elsewhere such as a pharmacy. Please be aware that we will have a very small supply of vaccines and at this stage appointments will be given on a first come first served basis and it is unlikely that we will have enough vaccine for all that want it. With this in mind, if you fall in to this category, we recommend that you return to the place that you had your vaccine last year and request it there.
The reason we don’t have enough vaccine for everybody is that we order the vaccine 12 months in advance. We base this order on the number of patients having it with us the previous season. Last year an unprecedented number of patients had their vaccination at a pharmacy, because of this we had to throw away nearly 400 vaccines. The pharmacy no doubt use the same basis for placing their orders and so should have ordered a vaccine for anybody that used their services last year. But still remember that we expect demand to be greater this year so don’t delay in seeking your vaccine from your pharmacy if you did so last year.
For our patients aged under 65 years and at risk
The influenza vaccine for patients aged under 65 years and at risk will not be available to us until the end of October. We will be writing to these patients soon and booking them into clinics. The same criteria as for the over 65s is likely to be applied.
NHS Shielded Patient List
This year the Government have advised that the seasonal influenza vaccination should be offered to household contacts of those on the NHS Shielded Patient List. This is specifically individuals who expect to share living accomodation with a person who was shielded on most days over the winter and therefore for whom continuing close contact is unavoidable.
We will be writing to our patients that were on the shielded list and ask them to pass this information on to their household members and encourage them to seek this vaccination.
Unfortunately as we have very limited supplies if the vaccine and most of our stock has been pre-allocated it is unlikely that we will be able to offer the vaccination at the practice to this group of patients. Therefore it would be advisable to seek this from a local pharmacy.
